Tianyu Telescope Enters Scientific Observation Phase

China’s Tianyu Telescope, located in Qinghai Province, has transitioned to the scientific observation stage after capturing images of the North America Nebula and over a million Milky Way stars, with formal operations set to begin in October 2026.

The Tianyu Telescope, a major astronomical project initiated in 2022, has officially entered its scientific observation phase. Located in Lenghu, northwest China’s Qinghai Province, the telescope recently captured a single exposure of the North America Nebula and the Pelican Nebula in the constellation Cygnus, along with more than one million surrounding stars in the Milky Way according to People’s Daily. This milestone marks the completion of its commissioning phase, paving the way for formal scientific surveys starting in October 2026 as reported by Xinhua.

Commissioning and Scientific Capabilities

The telescope, led by the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (TDLI) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and developed by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, boasts a wide field of view. It can capture nearly nine square degrees of the sky in a single exposure—equivalent to more than 40 full moons. This capability allows it to detect transient cosmic events, such as stellar explosions and gravitational-wave flashes from neutron star mergers, which often fade within seconds to minutes. When alerts are issued by other space telescopes or gravitational-wave detectors, the Tianyu Telescope can rapidly adjust to “rewind” the sky area under its real-time monitoring, restoring the celestial view from seconds before the event as stated by People’s Daily.

The telescope’s primary mission includes sustained photometric monitoring of hundreds of millions of celestial objects. This will enable the detection of subtle brightness variations, aiding in the discovery of exoplanets, variable stars, supernovae, and small solar system bodies. Feng Fabo, an associate professor at TDLI and the project director, emphasized the telescope’s role in advancing astrophysical research according to Xinhua.

International Collaboration and Data Sharing

The Tianyu project has already attracted research teams from Britain, Belgium, and Chile, highlighting its potential as a global scientific resource. Its data will be coordinated with multiple survey projects both domestically and internationally, fostering cross-border collaboration.

The telescope’s ability to monitor transient events in real time positions it as a critical tool for rapid response to cosmic phenomena. By integrating with existing gravitational-wave and space telescope networks, Tianyu enhances the chances of capturing fleeting astronomical events that might otherwise go undetected according to Xinhua.

Future Operational Transition

Looking ahead, the Tianyu Telescope will undergo a phased transition from commissioning observations to stable operations. This includes shifting from remote-controlled to fully automated observing modes.
