Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid Reaches GA with Licensing Details
The hybrid architecture, announced by Steve Downs during a Microsoft blog post, enables organizations to deploy session hosts on-premises using Nutanix AHV while maintaining Azure’s cloud-based management and identity services. This setup, described by Microsoft as a flexible path to modernization, allows companies to retain control over virtual machine infrastructure, networking, and disaster recovery while using Azure’s session brokering and access management.
The hybrid architecture relies on Azure Arc to connect on-premises session hosts to Azure, with users accessing desktops and applications via Windows App. While Microsoft maintains control over the Azure Virtual Desktop service, customers manage their own hardware, hypervisors, and lifecycle operations. Nutanix’s support for the hybrid model expands its role in end-user computing, positioning it as a bridge between on-premises infrastructure and Microsoft’s cloud ecosystem. Nutanix worked on the initiative as a launch ecosystem partner, helping bring Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid support to AHV, as noted in a Nutanix press release.

Licensing challenges and pricing uncertainty remain central issues. Microsoft requires OS user entitlement licenses alongside a separate Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid service license, but the latter’s pricing structure is unclear. A partner highlighted a double charge concern,
questioning whether the hybrid license would overlap with existing RDS CALs. A technical lead noted that the requirement for RDS CALs with Software Assurance kills around 90% of our potential deployments,
as most customers lack SA on their licenses. Microsoft’s documentation restricts support to Windows Server 2016–2025 with RDS CALs carrying Software Assurance or single-session Windows 10/11 Enterprise through Microsoft 365. This excludes Windows 11 multi-session, a feature requested by many preview testers.

The technical deployment process, outlined in Microsoft’s Azure documentation, involves deploying a virtual machine or physical Windows Server in the customer’s datacenter, installing the Azure Arc agent to register the machine with Azure, and then installing the Azure Virtual Desktop Arc extension. This extension configures the machine as a session host and registers it with the Azure Virtual Desktop service. Users access desktops and applications through the Windows App, with all communication occurring over HTTPS. The architecture remains unchanged from its limited preview in November 2025, which extended support beyond Azure Local to Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, VMware vSphere, and physical Windows Servers, as reported by InfoQ.

The hybrid model’s success will depend on Microsoft clarifying its pricing structure and expanding support for Windows 11 multi-session, as requested by preview testers. For now, organizations must weigh the benefits of hybrid deployment against unresolved financial and technical challenges, as the market awaits further guidance from the software giant.
