A Malaysian pilot was arrested on September 7 in the Klang Valley as part of an investigation into an international drug trafficking syndicate linked to a co-pilot detained in Jakarta, according to Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.
The arrest marks the seventh detainment in the probe, which stems from the July 2026 seizure of 25kg of ecstasy pills and methamphetamine at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Indonesian authorities found 15 packages containing 70,114 ecstasy pills and methamphetamine, valued at RM45 million (US$11 million), during a luggage inspection of the 39-year-old Malaysian co-pilot, who is now facing the death penalty in Indonesia.
Pilot Allegedly Managed Drug Proceeds
The newly arrested pilot, in his 30s, was detained for allegedly managing the flow of cash between the drug syndicate and another pilot, according to Hussein Omar Khan. He was involved in the handling of the money, specifically in the transferring of money,
Khan told reporters, adding that drug tests confirmed the suspect tested negative for drugs. This arrest brings the total number of detained individuals to seven, with six others previously arrested based on information obtained during questioning of the first pilot by NCID officers in Jakarta from August 11 to 15.
Investigations revealed that the second pilot was allegedly involved in the flow of cash between the syndicate and the second officer,
Khan said, citing the source. The suspect, who works for a different airline than the co-pilot arrested in Indonesia, is accused of channeling proceeds from drug sales through his accounts. He managed the money obtained from the sale of drugs. The money was channelled through him. In other words, he was involved in managing proceeds from the sale of drugs,
Hussein added.
Drug Seizures and International Links
Police conducted raids under Operation Melanoplus in the Klang Valley, seizing 959 cartridges of MDMA liquid, 61.26kg of MDMA liquid, and other drugs valued at RM10.82 million. The seizures included 70,114 ecstasy pills, 6.09kg of cannabis flower, and 3.25kg of methamphetamine, according to Khan.
Investigation Widens Beyond Supply Chain
The suspect worked for a different airline from the first pilot arrested in Indonesia,
said Khan, noting that the second pilot’s role in the network remains under investigation. The NCID has shared information with Indonesian authorities to facilitate further investigations into the transnational drug syndicate, which is believed to have operated across Malaysia and Indonesia.
What Comes Next for the Case
The case now hinges on the outcomes of ongoing investigations into the financial flows and international connections of the syndicate. With seven suspects detained in Malaysia and the co-pilot facing charges in Indonesia, the focus is shifting to the role of financial intermediaries like the newly arrested pilot. The investigation is continuing, and all six suspects have been detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985,
said Khan, who added that police will seek further detention orders after 60 days of investigation.
The arrest underscores the complexity of cross-border drug trafficking networks, where pilots and financial handlers play critical roles. As authorities in both Malaysia and Indonesia work to dismantle the syndicate, the case highlights the challenges of tracing illicit financial flows and enforcing international cooperation in drug enforcement.
