Canada and the U.S. escalated their trade war this week as Washington imposed tariffs and import bans on $20 billion in Canadian goods, prompting Ottawa to retaliate with equivalent measures, risking billions in economic fallout and heightened political tensions.
Tariffs and Import Bans Take Effect
The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian whisky, motorcycles, dairy products, and other goods starting September 29, while banning most Canadian alcohol, including beer, wine, and spirits. These measures, part of a broader escalation, target sectors critical to Canada’s economy, with annual Canadian exposure estimated at $2.3 billion to $2.8 billion. The restrictions also include whey, non-alcoholic beer, and cheese, with some dairy products facing 50% tariffs. The U.S. justified the moves as retaliation for Canada’s tariffs on $20 billion in American goods, which took effect earlier this month.
President Donald Trump, who has long criticized Canada’s trade practices, threatened to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in a social media post, signaling his administration’s aggressive stance. The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America,
Trump wrote, claiming the U.S. no longer expects to do much business with Ontario.
The move echoes his earlier efforts to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America,
which was applied to federal references, but other nations are not required to recognize the name.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney defended his government’s response, calling the U.S. actions “unacceptable” and emphasizing that Ottawa would match tariffs dollar for dollar, rate for rate.
The Canadian government has also restricted U.S. alcohol sales in eight of its provinces, a move that reportedly reduced U.S. spirits exports to Canada by over 70% year over year. The dispute has deepened as negotiations between the two nations collapsed, with Trump accusing Canada of ripping off the U.S. for years
and vowing to treat Canada like a State no longer.
Economic Impact and Business Uncertainty
The trade war is already straining businesses on both sides of the border. Michigan’s auto industry, heavily reliant on Canadian supply chains, faces potential disruptions as U.S. tariffs on Canadian automotive and steel imports begin in January. Jason Miller, an MSU professor of supply chain management, warned that any situation that affects trade with Canada hurts the state of Michigan more than any other state in the union.
Small businesses are also feeling the pressure. Kay’s Food Supply, a Detroit retailer, plans to absorb increased costs from Canadian tariffs, while leather goods producer Lincoln Threads sees an opportunity as higher prices for Canadian imports boost demand for domestic products. We’re going to see probably about 50% more with the Canadian tariffs increasing the price of Canadian wallets,
said owner Peter Ruppe. However, experts caution that the broader economic impact could be significant. A study cited in the Torontosun estimates that prolonged tariffs could reduce Canada’s real GDP or add roughly 0.3 percentage points to food inflation by spring 2027.
The Cato Institute’s Alfredo Carrillo Obregon noted that while the tariffs are wide-ranging in scope,
they are not high in magnitude in relation to the rest of our trade.
Public Sentiment and Political Ramifications
Public opinion in Canada remains divided. The backlash against Trump’s rhetoric has also bolstered support for Carney, with Canadians boycotting U.S. goods and cutting travel to the U.S.
Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st U.S. state have further inflamed tensions. Canadian historian Robert Bothwell called the dispute symbolic of resistance to Trump, noting that and what he’ll want to do is make an example of Carney and Canada and theoretically terrify everybody else while in fact showing them that they need to remove themselves even further from the United States.
Meanwhile, former vice president Mike Pence warned that the trade fight poses new risks for the economy,
urging a focus on free trade with free nations, most especially our trading partners to the north.
The conflict has also sparked concerns about long-term diplomatic fallout.
The immediate future remains uncertain. Canada’s counter-tariffs are set to stay in place unless negotiations resume, but Trump has shown little willingness to compromise. The U.S. has also barred Canadian products from federal contracts, further tightening the economic pressure.
