Senator John Fetterman made a surprise virtual appearance at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, delivering a video message in support of Pennsylvania Republican Senator Dave McCormick and drawing sharp praise from conservatives alongside furious blowback from his own Democratic colleagues.
Fetterman Endorses McCormick in Surprise Convention Video
The Pennsylvania Democrat appeared on screen standing outside a steel mill, offering a striking display of cross-party support during the first-ever Republican midterm convention. Fetterman, who has increasingly broken with his party, introduced Sen. Dave McCormick to speak at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, noting that McCormick is not up for reelection this fall.

Fetterman said in the pre-recorded message, gesturing toward the steel mill behind him. He added that he was proud to count him as my great friend, despite their party differences, and pledged to work with him and President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life.
Democratic Fury and Conservative Reaction
While convention attendees welcomed the unexpected cross-over appeal, the reaction from the senator’s home state party leaders was swift and severe. Pennsylvania state representative Malcolm Kenyatta issued a blistering rebuke of the video message.
“John Fetterman is the laziest Benedict Arnold America has ever seen. He didn’t even have it in him to get off his couch in his million-dollar penthouse to kiss Donald Trump’s ring in person. He phoned it in, just as he has every day as our senator. John should do his job or resign,”

On the convention floor, however, the reception stood in sharp contrast. Tracy Smith, an attendee who traveled from Maryland, voiced enthusiasm for the appearance. I actually think it’s really awesome that he’s come around,
she said, adding that he’s more common sense, and even though he’s a Democrat, he can see both sides.
Eric Torrison, who traveled from Arizona to attend the convention, admitted he was aghast when Fetterman got elected, but noted that the lawmaker seems to have held to his beliefs, and not run to the left.
Targeting Talarico and Debating the Midterm Map
The convention also featured attacks on other prominent Democrats. Ken Paxton, Texas’ GOP nominee for Senate, took direct aim at James Talarico, Texas’ Democratic nominee for the upper chamber, telling the crowd: I will fight to preserve the American dream. James Talarico is running to destroy it.
Paxton added: California already has two senators, it doesn’t need a third. But that’s exactly what James Talarico would be.
Sen. Tim Scott, R-South Carolina, also slammed Talarico, noting past comments that he’s made about “six genders” during a Texas House committee meeting discussion on a bill regarding student athletes and birth certificates. Talarico countered those attacks during his own counterprogramming interview with Fox News, acknowledging: I missed the mark on some of my past statements, I’ll be the first to admit it,
while clarifying that there are two sexes, and then there’s a small percentage of people with genetic abnormalities.
Oz Highlights Weight Loss Drugs and Laken Riley Tribute
The Dallas gathering also featured remarks from Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, who credited an expansion of TrumpRx.gov—a government website listing discounted prescription drugs negotiated by the administration—with driving what he described as an historic America weight loss.
Oz pointed to the inclusion of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, or “the fat shot,telling the arena crowd:
So many of you look like gazelles tonight, apparently for that reason.”
Earlier in the program, delegates watched an emotional video tribute about Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was murdered in 2024 while running on the University of Georgia campus. Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, appeared in the video alongside her other daughter, Lauren Phillips, recalling Riley as joyful, peaceful, kind, gentle, and patient.
Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan citizen who arrived in the United States illegally two years prior, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Donald Trump eventually signed the Laken Riley Act as the first bill of his second presidency in 2025.
Shifting Alignments Ahead of the Midterms
Fetterman’s decision to participate via a video message highlights his ongoing divergence from party orthodoxy, having repeatedly clashed with Democrats on key issues like the war in Iran. While current and former staff reported that the senator was avoiding constituent events and behaving erratically, Fetterman has defended himself against accounts gaining traction on X, maintaining that he could still win a Democratic primary if he ran this fall as he serves out his first term ahead of his 2028 reelection.
