Goldenvoice canceled the inaugural Ocean Way music festival in Santa Monica just two weeks before its scheduled September 26-27 debut. Severe storm surf and runoff from Hurricane Marie caused extensive beach erosion near the Santa Monica Pier, prompting city officials and organizers to pull the plug over attendee safety concerns.

Hurricane Marie Triggers Severe Beach Erosion

The two-day beachfront concert series was slated to take place on a stretch of sand south of the Santa Monica Pier known as The Sandbox. However, offshore weather patterns changed those plans abruptly when Hurricane Marie sent powerful Southern California swells crashing into local coastlines. The storm, spurred by a warming eastern Pacific Ocean, produced dangerous rip currents and heavy runoff that stripped away sand along the waterfront.

City evaluation teams determined that the erosion was severe enough to compromise venue infrastructure. According to municipal assessments, the damage would have required pushing the safe shoreline setback 96 feet inland, while the southern boundary would have needed to shift 500 feet north to clear runoff from the Pico-Kenter Storm Drain outfall. Officials concluded there was simply not enough usable beach remaining to safely accommodate festival stages, activations, and attendees.

Santa Monica City Council member Dan Hall emphasized that safeguarding the public came before all else. However, the safety of festival-goers, our residents and the Pier must remain our priority, Hall stated in an announcement to local reporters.

Lineup, Ticket Refunds, and Logistics

The cancellation leaves ticketholders scrambling after Goldenvoice and ticketing platform AXS pulled the plug on an ambitious debut. The festival was expected to draw between 30,000 and 35,000 attendees to a weekend of car-free, transit-oriented music programming that encouraged visitors to use the Metro E Line, local bus routes, and bicycle valets.

Organizers confirmed automatically processed refunds through AXS, with funds returning to accounts within five to seven business days.

The postponed lineup boasted major headliners alongside eclectic indie and electronic acts.

Economic Stakes for a Struggling Waterfront

The loss of Ocean Way deals a heavy economic blow to Santa Monica, where retail and nightlife sectors have struggled to regain footing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. City leaders viewed the beachfront festival as a critical anchor for local revitalization under the city’s Realignment Plan, which aims to boost public safety and spur commercial activity.

Goldenvoice concert producer Nic Adler spent months meeting with municipal figures and community members to shape an event that honored the neighborhood’s creative legacy. Santa Monica has an incredible music history, and Goldenvoice has been fortunate to be part of that story, Adler said when the festival was first announced in July. From legendary shows at the Civic Auditorium to the origins of Ocean Way Recording just steps from the beach, there’s a creative legacy here that’s unlike anywhere else.

“Ocean Way Festival is our opportunity to celebrate that history while building something that feels authentically Santa Monica for years to come.”

Broader Vulnerabilities in Coastal Live Entertainment

Ocean Way’s sudden end highlights a mounting operational crisis for outdoor concert promoters facing increasingly erratic weather and climate impacts. The Santa Monica cancellation marks the second major Southern California beachside music festival to collapse this year, following the inaugural LA Jazz Festival on Dockweiler Beach, which called off its August events due to mounting municipal permitting costs and financial hurdles.

Nationwide, weather volatility has wreaked havoc on festival calendars.

Despite the setback, organizers and city officials insist the project is merely delayed rather than abandoned. Staff reports from the Santa Monica City Council indicate that planning conversations are already focused on securing dates to bring Ocean Way to the beach in 2027.
