In response to what officials termed an unacceptable security breach, Berlin ordered the immediate closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn as well as the cultural center known as the Russian House in Berlin. In a parallel diplomatic confrontation, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of Romania’s Moscow Embassy, Liliana Burda, to hand over a formal notification declaring a Romanian diplomat persona non grata.
The action by Moscow serves as a direct tit-for-tat response after Bucharest expelled a Russian diplomat. That initial Romanian expulsion occurred after three unmanned aerial vehicles crashed inside Romanian territory.
