Apple entered the foldable smartphone market, unveiling the iPhone Duo with a 7.6-inch inner display and a $1,999 starting price. The device launches in more than 70 countries and regions on October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16, carrying an AED 8,499 price tag in the UAE.
Apple waited eight years while industry rivals deployed various folding form factors, but John Ternus kicked off his first Apple event as CEO by introducing the passport-style foldable device. The company opted for the Duo name rather than Ultra or other monikers, aligning it with compact naming conventions like Air, Neo, and Pro.
Design, Dual Displays, and Durability Specs
The iPhone Duo is shorter and wider than many competing foldables. When unfolded, the inner display measures 7.6 inches—50 percent larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max—while the 5.4-inch outer display lets users operate it like a conventional smartphone when closed. Apple reports that the outer screen provides roughly 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both panels support ProMotion, Always-On display technology, and reach up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The physical chassis measures 11.3mm thick when closed and 5.2mm when open. Apple touted it during the presentation as the thinnest iPhone ever, though that metric applies only in its open configuration. The hardware is built with a Grade 5 titanium body and hinge cover, an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, and a nano-texture finish on the inner screen designed to minimize damage. The hinge utilizes over 100 tiny components, supported internally by structural ribs and ceramic fiber inserts in the antenna splits to enhance frame rigidity.
A20 Pro Performance, Dual Batteries, and Camera System
Under the hood, the device runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chipset built on 2nm tech, backed by a custom vapor chamber for cooling. The chip features up to a 50 percent increase in memory bandwidth, a 6-core CPU that is 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU delivering 40 percent faster graphics performance, and a 32-core Neural Engine. It also incorporates the N1 wireless networking chip and the C2 cellular modem system with mmWave support in the US.

Power is managed by a dual-battery architecture designed to deliver all-day usage, yielding up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours on the outer screen. Fast-charging capabilities replenish the battery from zero to 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes via wire, or 30 minutes wirelessly.
Photography is handled by a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system that includes a variable aperture automatically adjusting to let in up to 50 percent more light, alongside an Ultra Wide lens. Users can take selfies with the rear cameras while utilizing the outer display as a viewfinder via Duo Preview, while Smart Take relies on on-device AI to automatically capture photos when subjects pose. Later this year, the Duo will also add support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C.
Global Release Timeline and Regional Pricing Across the UAE, US, and Saudi Arabia
The device rolls out internationally starting October 23 across more than 70 countries and regions. Initial markets include the UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, India, Türkiye, the UK, and the US, with an additional 28 markets receiving stock on October 30. Pre-orders begin on October 16.

Market Impact and Competition with Samsung
Apple’s entry places the Duo into direct competition with established industry players. Samsung, which launched its first Galaxy Fold in 2019, currently holds about 38 percent of the global foldable market. Following Apple’s announcement, Samsung deployed a promotional campaign highlighting its multi-year experience in the segment.

Analysts cited by Reuters estimate that Apple will capture roughly a quarter of the market and expanding the overall category.
Whether consumer adoption at the $1,999 price point will validate analysts’ growth projections for the wider foldable ecosystem remains to be seen as retail units reach customers later this October.
