How Star Trek Fans Named NASA’s First Orbiter
The spacecraft did not always carry the moniker that made it famous. NASA originally planned to name Orbital Vehicle-101 (OV-101) Constitution to honor the nation’s foundational document, with a public debut scheduled for Constitution Day in 1976. That plan changed due to an overwhelming grassroots effort.
Fans of the science fiction television series Star Trek mounted a determined write-in campaign directed at NASA and President Gerald R. Ford. Operating long before the age of the internet and social media, supporters sent hundreds of thousands of letters urging the government to name the vehicle after the fictional starship made famous by the show.
The strategy succeeded. During a White House meeting on September 8, 1976—coincidentally the 10th anniversary of the original television show’s debut on NBC—President Ford informed NASA Administrator James C. Fletcher that he favored the name Enterprise because of its distinguished naval tradition and familiarity to millions of viewers.
Rollout Day in Palmdale and the Star Trek Connection
When the factory doors opened at the Rockwell International plant in Palmdale, California, on September 17, 1976, the orbiter bore the name Enterprise in bold letters across its side. The event blended aerospace engineering with science fiction history as the vehicle rolled out while Star Trek had been off the air for seven years.
Series creator Gene Roddenberry and several cast members attended the ceremony. As the shuttle emerged from the hangar, the Air Force Band of the Golden West performed Alexander Courage’s iconic Star Trek musical score. Haise, C. Gordon Fullerton, Joe H. Engle, and Richard H. Truly.
Approach and Landing Tests That Paved the Way for Orbit
Although the initial plan conceived OV-101 as a vehicle that would undergo atmospheric testing before being retrofitted into a space-worthy orbiter, engineers determined that modifying the prototype would be too costly. Instead, NASA utilized the vehicle exclusively for ground and aerodynamic testing.

In 1977, the Enterprise underwent critical approach and landing tests. A modified Boeing 747 carried the orbiter aloft to approximately 25,000 feet before releasing it so astronaut pilots could guide the unpowered craft back to Edwards Air Force Base, landing it like a glider.
Those unpowered flights verified the aerodynamic characteristics of the winged spacecraft, clearing the path for operational missions. On April 12, 1981, Columbia became the first space shuttle to launch into orbit, initiating a three-decade program that constructed the International Space Station, repaired the Hubble Space Telescope, and carried crews into orbit across 135 total missions.
Half a Century of Legacy at the Intrepid Museum
Today, the prototype orbiter is preserved at the Intrepid Museum in New York City following its arrival in 2012. The museum is marking the 50th anniversary with a panel discussion featuring space industry leaders, including NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya, former NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden Jr., and Axiom Space Director of Human Spaceflight Peggy Whitson.
