Laguna Colorada, a shallow salt lake perched 4,300 meters above sea level in Bolivia’s Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, features prominently in satellite observations released across the region. Spanning approximately 60 square kilometers, the high-altitude lake derives its stark red and green hues from specialized algae and mineral deposits.
High-resolution imaging from European space missions and astronaut photography captured aboard the International Space Station reveal the striking geography of the Andean Altiplano. Positioned near the border with Chile, the region combines snow-capped volcanoes, salt flats, and high-altitude lagoons that serve as critical habitats for protected birdlife.
Satellite Monitoring and Multi-Spectral Views of the Altiplano
Earth observation satellites deliver open data which supports the monitoring of bodies of water around the globe. This capability provides essential insights for environmental management and biodiversity conservation in remote, sparsely populated terrain.
A Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on August 25, 2026, highlights the rugged landscape of the southern Bolivian Altiplano near the Chilean border. The false-color view utilizes the mission’s near-infrared channel to pick out sparse vegetation along lower-altitude river valleys and urban settlements such as Calama in northern Chile and the Rio Pata in Bolivia. According to the data, the Andes mountain range runs parallel to the national border between the Quetena volcano and Calama, an area situated at an elevation of 2260 m in the region of Antofagasta, northern Chile.
Satellite observations also capture seasonal shifts in water composition. An earlier Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on April 19, 2025, showed the lake displaying a distinct greenish-yellow tint, demonstrating how surface conditions fluctuate over time.
Algal Biology and Environmental Dynamics
The water coloration that defines Laguna Colorada is driven by biological and chemical factors unique to extreme desert environments. The shallow, 10-kilometer (6 mile) long basin contains high concentrations of sodium chloride, sulphates, and microorganisms, making it much saltier than ocean water. The landscape features snow-covered mountains and numerous lakes at an altitude ranging from about 2000 m more than 4000 m above sea level.

The strong red-brown shade of the lake originates from algae that thrive in saline conditions. As lake water evaporates in the desert climate, salinity levels rise. Changes in water temperature and salinity alter the dominant algae species, occasionally causing the lake to cycle into green phases because different algae display different colors. The type of algae at any given time is determined by these changing environmental factors, and its composition varies according to the seasons.
Ancient shorelines visible along the periphery indicate that the water body has been larger in the past. Today, access roads on three sides of the lake are used by tourists to visit these other-worldly landscapes.
Orbital Photography from the International Space Station
Complementing automated satellite passes, human spaceflight missions have documented the region from orbit. An astronaut aboard the International Space Station took this photograph of the brightly colored Laguna Colorada in the Bolivian Andes Mountains, benefiting from the lack of atmospheric haze at high altitude—the lake sits 4,300 meters above sea level (14,100 feet)—which helps make images of the region especially clear.

The photograph, cataloged as astronaut photograph ISS043-E-122588, was acquired on April 16, 2015, with a Nikon D4 digital camera using a 400 millimeter lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 43 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. Wildlife Reserves and International Wetland Designations
Beyond its visual appeal, the lake functions as a vital ecological hub. Laguna Colorada is the center of a wildlife reserve, located specifically within Bolivia’s Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve in the department of Potosí.
The area is part of the Central Andean dry puna ecoregion, which is characterised by grasslands, colourful lakes, volcanoes and salt flats. The Laguna Colorada – a shallow, saline lake fed by the Sulor river – nests at an altitude of 4278 m in the Andean Altiplano. It serves as a key habitat for the endangered James’s flamingo, which gather here in large numbers, drawn by the lake’s food supply, alongside vast numbers of flamingos.
In recognition of its ecological significance, the lake was listed in 1990 as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.
The lake has been designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, placing the high-altitude ecosystem among globally protected environments monitored for conservation.
