In Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society, or CHAOS, is hosting a free public observing event from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at University Place, 201 S. Estes Drive, where members have set up telescopes in the common area to help visitors get a closer look at the Moon and Saturn. The group is holding an additional session Saturday night at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham from 8:30 to 10 p.m. as part of the group’s public skywatching program.
Further south in Charleston, South Carolina, the Lowcountry Stargazers are welcoming the public for a free event from 5 to 9 p.m. at Brittlebank Park, located downtown at 185 Lockwood Drive along the Ashley River, inviting the public to join the local amateur astronomy club as part of a worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation, and understanding of our Moon and its connection to space science, exploration, and human culture.

Utilizing advanced computer simulations, researchers found that the moon could have formed shortly after an impact between Earth and a Mars-sized body named Theia.
