Symptoms strike remote workers frequently, with dry and irritated eyes caused by reduced blinking, dropping from 15 to 20 times per minute normally down to just 4 to 7 during screen use. Headaches, blurred vision, neck pain, and light sensitivity are also common.

Protecting ocular health in a digital-first environment requires deliberate habits and mindful adjustments. Dr Bhardwaj recommends following the 20-20-20 rule, where every 20 minutes an individual looks away from the screen and focuses on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This action relaxes eye muscles, reduces fatigue, and prevents strain. Additionally, people should make a conscious effort to blink frequently to keep eyes lubricated, using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops if persistent dryness occurs, as advised by an eye care professional.
Taking longer breaks away from screens every couple of hours helps relax eyes and the body. Regular comprehensive eye exams are essential to ensure vision is up to date and to detect early signs of strain or other problems. Furthermore, optimizing screen settings by matching brightness to room light, dialing down color temperature to cut blue light in the evenings, and using night mode or blue-light filters help reduce glare. Computer glasses with anti-reflective coatings or blue-light blockers, customized through a quick refraction test, also provide support.
Smart ergonomics dictate keeping screens about an arm’s length away, around 20 to 28 inches, and positioning them just below eye level so the top sits at or under natural gaze. Tilting screens slightly encourages a gentle downward look, which keeps strain low during long sessions.
