Sciences Po delays its results on Parcoursup by one week, cascading waiting effects to be expected

by time news

On Parcoursup, Sciences Po is used to having an exceptional status, even if it means making other establishments wait. This will again be the case this year. The Paris Institute of Political Studies (IEP) will not give its admission results on June 2 at 7 p.m., like all the other post-baccalaureate courses on the Parcoursup platform, but only the 8th, as stated on its website. This delay will have cascading effects on thousands of young people who will remain “stranded” longer than expected waiting for an answer, and who will thus see their uncertainty and prolonged stress.

Sciences Po offers an explanation: its oral admissions have been delayed this year because of the baccalaureate specialty exams. These were initially scheduled for March, before being postponed, due to the pandemic, to May. So many days during which the IEP was unable to pass the selection interviews to its candidates, mobilized by these tests. Sciences Po, which has not organized a competition since 2021 and selects only on file and oral, could therefore not have finished in time for June 2. The Parisian institute, which saw its management team change at the end of 2021 after the resignation of Frédéric Mion, claims to have mobilized 800 examiners for its selection process.

The problem is that this change of date does not only concern the 2,000 or so young people eligible for Sciences Po, who will wait another week before being certain of their fate. On the platform, candidates who have taken the orals at Sciences Po Paris must, before having the results from rue Saint-Guillaume on June 8, accept a place in another course to which they have applied and keep some. others pending. Quit giving it up later.

“Enormous consequences”

What seize up the machine and stagnate the progress of the students in the waiting lists for these other courses for a few days. This derogatory calendar from which Sciences Po benefits will have an effect in particular for the 10,500 candidates for the seven Institutes of Political Studies (who will give their answer on June 2) or for those who have applied for the other courses traditionally acclaimed by these high school students: double licenses , political science licenses, preparatory classes, IEP of Grenoble or Bordeaux which recruit “outside the common competition”…

“It’s the flapping effect of the butterfly’s wings: a small decision like that then has enormous consequences, observes Pierre Mathiot, director of the IEP of Lille, in charge of the joint competition of the seven IEPs. All the IEPs complied with the very restrictive schedule of the ministry. We had to make a huge effort, in particular because our correctors were also mobilized by the baccalaureate specialty exams. Already, Sciences Po had an exceptional status last year, because they had just joined Parcoursup… I see that this is once again the case, with chain effects for thousands of young people. »
