Aqara has officially released its new Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400, following an initial announcement at CES 2026. Priced at $80, the mmWave motion sensor is designed to detect the presence or absence of up to 10 people simultaneously within a space. Unlike simple passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors, mmWave devices use high-frequency radio signals capable of detecting minute movements, such as the rise and fall of a person’s chest while breathing, ensuring lights and automations remain active even when occupants are sitting quietly.
Aqara Launches Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 With Thread and Zigbee Support
The FP400 measures 64 x 64 x 29.5mm, is powered by a 5V/1A USB-C connection, and comes with an adjustable mounting bracket in its retail package. To set up the device, users bind it to a compatible hub or network, walk around the edges of the room to establish boundaries, and allow the sensor to learn the empty room environment before configuring bespoke automations and detection zones.
Dual-Protocol Connectivity and Matter Integration
The sensor features dual-protocol support for both Thread and Zigbee, offering distinct routes into Matter smart home ecosystems. When utilizing Thread, the device operates as a Matter-over-Thread accessory and can connect directly through a compatible third-party Thread Border Router—such as a supported HomePod (second generation), HomePod mini, or compatible Apple TV 4K—without requiring an Aqara hub. This direct connection method is compatible with platforms including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, and SmartThings.
Alternatively, the Zigbee option is intended primarily for existing users integrated into Aqara’s hardware ecosystem. In Zigbee mode, an Aqara hub is required to bridge the sensor into third-party Matter platforms. According to product details, Thread integration allows the FP400 to join a local network so users can configure room layouts, detection zones, sensitivity, and absence delays directly within the Aqara app before adding it to a preferred Matter platform.
Customizable Detection Zones and Features
Rooms monitored by the FP400 can be divided into custom detection zones based on a grid of 0.5 x 0.5-metre sections, enabling a single sensor to manage multiple distinct areas such as a seating arrangement, dining table, desk, or entrance. The device also incorporates an ambient light sensor to supply illuminance data, allowing automations to factor in both room occupancy and current light levels. Additionally, the sensor supports people counting, which can help adjust lighting, heating, cooling, or ventilation based on how many occupants are present.

There are some discrepancies regarding how zones are exposed to third-party platforms. While the main product description indicates that up to eight custom occupancy zones can be exposed to third-party Matter ecosystems alongside whole-room occupancy and illuminance data, a separate footnote notes that Thread integration may expose only one overall presence sensor and one illuminance sensor, pending platform or firmware updates.

Initial expectations for the consumer hardware included posture detection capabilities—such as telling whether an occupant is standing, sitting, or lying down. However, following testing inquiries, Aqara clarified that posture detection features are no longer planned for the consumer FP400 model. Instead, those capabilities are slated to arrive later in a separate, non-consumer version designated as the FP400 Pro, which will target professional installers for applications such as new home construction and the health and elder care sectors.
