During Monday’s final arguments, the court addressed remaining evidentiary boundaries. Judge Gregory ruled that cameras will be allowed to remain in the courtroom during witness testimony, including when Faith Hedgepeth’s former roommate takes the stand.

A former forensic evidence specialist acknowledged on the stand that her team collected the sample but failed to document its whereabouts or update her report after it was lost before testing.

The brutal slaying shocked the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Faith Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old and member of the Haliwa-Saponi Native American tribe, attended a sorority event and studied at the campus library with her roommate, Karena Rosario, before returning to their apartment.
On Sept. 7, 2012, Rosario and a friend returned to the residence after Hedgepeth failed to answer phone calls.

. Despite gathering physical evidence and a rape kit that indicated semen, the initial investigation stalled, leaving the campus and family without answers for nearly a decade.
The breakthrough arrived in 2021, when police arrested Miguel Salguero-Olivares after state crime analysts asserted that DNA evidence collected from the scene matched his profile. Salguero-Olivares, who was 28 at the time of his arrest and had no known personal connection to the victim, has adamantly denied his involvement.
