In a milestone for autonomous warfare, a Ukrainian Navy drone boat destroyed a Russian explosive drone boat using a remote-controlled machine gun turret during a Black Sea engagement. The September 12 clash marks the first recorded combat battle between uncrewed surface vessels.
The lopsided engagement unfolded when members of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence detected a Russian uncrewed surface vessel in the Black Sea and directed a Ukrainian Navy drone to intercept it. According to naval analyst HI Sutton, writing in Naval News, the targeted Russian craft was positively identified
as an Orcan surface drone featuring a jet ski type steerable water jet built to ram targets and detonate, as noted by Arstechnica.
The Sargan-3000 System and the Black Sea Engagement
The hunting craft deployed by Kyiv was a Sargan-3000 unmanned boat developed by the Ukrainian company Nordex. Originally conceived as a one-way attack platform, the modular vessel has evolved into a reusable multi-role combat system. It integrates with Ukraine’s Delta situational awareness system for real-time video, telemetry, and targeting data.
The platform also features redundant satellite communications, autonomous inertial and optical navigation for GPS-jammed environments, an electronic countermeasures suite, and multi-channel remote control with onboard sensors. During the recent encounter, the Sargan-3000 utilized a Kongsberg Protector remote weapon station mounted with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, according to reporting by Eurasiantimes.
Video footage released by the Ukrainian Navy shows the Sargan-3000 locking onto the Russian vessel and opening fire. The Ukrainian drone fired from a distance of one kilometer, disabling the adversary’s communications antenna before riddling the craft with sustained heavy machine-gun fire until it sank stern-first.
The Ukrainian Navy stated via a Telegram post that units of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) had detected the target and that the Ukrainian Navy’s Sargan 3000 unmanned boat, equipped with a 12.7 mm Protector remotely operated weapon station, had successfully destroyed it, adding that this marked the first naval battle in history between unmanned boats.
Tactical Evolution in Maritime Warfare
Military observers note that the clash signals a fundamental shift in maritime combat dynamics. While uncrewed surface vessels have been widely deployed by Ukraine to impose sea denial against Russia’s conventional Black Sea Fleet using explosive payloads, the introduction of armed patrol and hunter-killer capabilities changes the rules of engagement.

Neither the Russian Ministry of Defense nor official state media has acknowledged the sinking of the drone boat, maintaining a pattern of silence regarding specific Black Sea losses. Analysts point out that Russian Orcan drones often operate in coordination with flying aerial reconnaissance assets, such as Geran drones, which help boost communications between operators and sea drones.
As both sides continue to expand their arsenals with submersible, amphibious, and surface uncrewed platforms, the waters of the Black Sea have transformed into a testing ground for fully autonomous naval warfare.
