Meta’s Muse AI Hits Top US App Charts and Partners With Shopify for Checkout

Meta launched its personal AI agent, Muse, which surged to the top of iOS app store download charts in the U.S. within two weeks, securing partnerships with Shopify for agentic checkout while facing scrutiny over cybersecurity and data privacy.

Meta Platforms introduced its new personal AI assistant, Muse, on September 8, driving significant downloads and sparking fresh debates over consumer trust, data security, and the future of automated commerce. The app quickly outpaced major tech rivals on Apple’s iOS app store, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the leading free smartphone program in the U.S. by Friday, according to data from Sensor Tower.

The app accumulated 730,000 downloads over its first five days. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg positioned the release as a major push into the agentic AI market, aiming to provide users with a supercharged digital assistant capable of handling complex, multi-step workflows across the web.

How Muse Works and the Shopify Checkout Integration

Unlike traditional AI chatbots that function primarily as conversational search engines or brainstorming partners, Muse is designed to act autonomously. The agent connects directly to everyday workflows, including email, calendars, payments, dining, and shopping platforms. Users can instruct Muse to send emails, book travel, lower bills, fill out electronic forms, and make purchases. For checkouts, Muse leverages Link by Stripe, with integrations for Shopify’s Shop Pay and 1Password coming soon.

Shopify moved quickly to integrate its merchant ecosystem with the new AI platform. Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke announced a partnership to bring agentic checkout through Shop Pay across Shopify-powered stores. Under the collaboration, Muse scours Shopify catalogs using the Universal Commerce Protocol—co-developed by Google and Shopify—to match shopper prompts with product data, allowing AI agents to navigate discovery and final purchase automatically.

“Agentic commerce really excites us. The agents don’t have the same challenges as humans.”

Mishra noted that AI agents have more context and can source products much faster than human buyers.

Privacy Scrutiny and Corporate Friction

Despite strong initial consumer adoption and a stock surge that saw Meta shares jump more than 11%, the launch occurs amid intense industry concern over AI safety and cybersecurity. Meta introduced Muse shortly after agreeing to a massive $18 billion multistate settlement over social media consumer harms, followed by a separate agreement to pay roughly $17 billion to settle with a coalition of state attorneys general regarding youth safety on Facebook and Instagram.

Muse requires users to share extensive personal data and connect sensitive accounts, raising privacy questions.

Corporate friction has also emerged. Amazon blocked access to its retail website for the Muse bot, citing privacy and security risks. This stance contrasts sharply with Shopify’s open integration strategy.

Subscription Tiers and Market Outlook

While the basic version of Muse is free, Meta is testing alternative monetization models beyond its core digital advertising business by introducing two paid subscription tiers at launch: Power at $20 per month and Maximum at $100 per month, priced according to usage limits.

Industry analysts remain divided on whether personal AI shopping agents will achieve permanent mainstream adoption or follow the boom-and-drop trajectory of previous novelties like OpenAI’s Sora or Meta’s Vibes AI video tool. According to a recent Mastercard forecast, one in 10 shoppers will use a personal AI agent to purchase products by 2030, though current consumer surveys indicate widespread skepticism regarding outsourced purchasing and data sharing.
