President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a closed-door meeting at Gracie Mansion on Monday, discussing affordable housing, immigration, and affordability in New York City, according to Yahoo News. The gathering marked the third meeting between the two political figures since Mamdani assumed office nearly one year ago, following two previous discussions at the White House.
Trump and Mayor Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion
The visit coincided with the president’s trip to New York ahead of his scheduled speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. It marked the first presidential visit to the historic riverside residence in 45 years, following Ronald Reagan’s 1981 meeting there with Ed Koch, according to The Guardian. Trump was accompanied by his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, while Mamdani was joined by his chief of staff, Elle Bisgaard-Church.
Housing and Immigration Discussions
During a joint press conference following the closed-door talks, Mamdani and Trump addressed reporters about their conversation. Mamdani stated that they discussed building more housing in New York and agreed to coordinate further discussions regarding Sunnyside Yard, a proposal aimed at constructing approximately 12,000 affordable housing units in Queens. While neither official provided specific details on how city or federal levels of government would participate in developing the proposal, Mamdani noted that the conversation centered on making life more affordable in the city.
The two leaders also discussed immigration policies. Trump spoke to the mayor regarding his administration’s decision to cancel temporary protected status for Syrian and Haitian immigrants. Mamdani voiced strong opinions on keeping immigrant New Yorkers safe, emphasizing that Haitian residents are critical members of the city and its economy.
Mamdani also raised concerns following a Department of Homeland Security announcement regarding Operation Rotten Apple,
which resulted in 2,200 arrests across New York State, rejecting federal claims that many of those detained were criminals. Additionally, Mamdani and Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada had met with migrant delivery workers in New York City a day prior to discuss precarity and fears surrounding an increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests.
Political Context and Diverging Perspectives
The meeting took place against the backdrop of the upcoming November midterm elections, where the Republican Party has frequently highlighted Mamdani — a 34-year-old democratic socialist born in Uganda and New York’s first Muslim mayor — as a symbol of the Democratic Party’s platform. Despite his own party’s campaign messaging denouncing Democrats, Trump offered an unusually warm assessment of the mayor during the press conference, stating that he hoped Mamdani would be a great mayor and expressing a desire for what is good for New York and the country.
Both leaders acknowledged they were frank about their disagreements. When asked if he challenged Trump over the administration’s decision to ban certain media outlets from White House grounds, Mamdani stated that he informed the president he believes in having all members of the press present on the lawn.
The meeting drew scrutiny from conservative commentators, including influencer Laura Loomer, who criticized the president on social media for meeting with Mamdani ahead of the midterms and argued that the visit would embolden the political left.
