Eldridge initially appeared in Friday’s starting lineup at first base for the series opener at Dodger Stadium. The Giants scratched him less than an hour before the game and replaced him with Brett Harris. Giants manager Tony Vitello initially hoped Eldridge would be cleared to return on Saturday, but the rookie continued to experience wooziness, prompting the team to sit him against Dodgers left-hander Tarik Skubal.
Vitello checked out the hotel spot himself and noted that Eldridge’s comfort was initially the primary concern before symptoms lingered. Vitello said the team’s medical staff had been monitoring the player closely overnight and into the morning hours.
“It’s kind of a weird spot in the hotel. I checked it out. Yesterday it was a little bit more about just his comfort. But now, stemming from last night and this morning, those guys have been monitoring him like crazy. Just some lingering effects. And you throw in the fact that you’ve got 97 [mph] coming from [Skubal], it doesn’t make sense [to start him].”
