Tanzanian regional police forces launched sweeping security operations resulting in hundreds of arrests across Dodoma and Tabora. Authorities recovered stolen electronics, vehicles, drugs, and wildlife trophies. Courts handed down severe penalties, including a death sentence for murder and multiple life terms for violent offenses.
Regional security crackdowns across Tanzania have yielded hundreds of arrests, substantial seizures of contraband, and multiple significant criminal convictions. Law enforcement agencies in both the Dodoma and Tabora regions coordinated wide operations targeting everything from property theft and narcotics trafficking to wildlife poaching and infrastructure vandalism.
Dodoma Operation Nets 418 Suspects and Tons of Contraband
Police in Dodoma arrested 418 suspects and recovered an assortment of stolen goods, drugs, and vehicles during a month-long security operation conducted between August 12 and September 7, Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Gallus Hyera said on Monday. Briefing journalists, ACP Hyera detailed that the sweep resulted in the seizure of 46.805 kilogrammes of khat, three kilogrammes of cannabis, 45 motorcycles, and 39 drums of diesel.
Among the arrested individuals, 118 suspects were taken into custody while in possession of property suspected to be stolen or intended for criminal use. ACP Hyera listed the recovered items, which included 24 boxes of tiles, 15 containers of rice, 127 chickens, five Hisense television sets, two HP computers, one Dell laptop, two smartphones, four vehicle batteries valued at 1.8m/-, two 5,000-litre water tanks, 26 mobile phones, five fans, and four gas cookers. Officers also recovered an aluminium machine, two radios, a power bank, a blender, a refrigerator, two shaving machines, and two wristwatches.
The operation specifically targeted distinct criminal categories. The crackdown led to the arrest of 16 suspects over vandalism of Ring Road infrastructure, seven over environmental offences, four over murders, one over rape, and four over witchcraft-related offences.
Tabora Sweep Yields 119 Arrests and a Death Sentence
Meanwhile, in the Tabora region, regional police arrested 119 suspects in a special operation running since August 1, according to Tabora Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Twaha Lulengelule. The sweep targeted theft, murder, wildlife offences, drug trafficking, indecent assault, and escaping lawful custody.
Investigations into several cases concluded swiftly, leading to immediate arraignments and convictions.

Additional convictions in Tabora carried heavy penalties. Three suspects—Caroline Isack Siara, Yahaya Saidi Mayunga, and Mrisho Juma Ngelengi—received 30-year prison sentences each after courts found them guilty of possessing cannabis and heroin. Another individual, Ibrahim Kitundu, received a 20-year sentence for committing an indecent assault against a child.
Seizures of Illicit Brews and Wildlife Trophies
Both regional crackdowns uncovered extensive networks dealing in illicit substances and environmental contraband. In Tabora, the operation dismantled local production by arresting 40 suspects found in possession of 205 litres of illicit local brew known as moshi. Wildlife crime also featured prominently in the sweep; police arrested 34-year-old Kiumbe Iddi, a resident of Kahama in the Shinyanga Region, after officers recovered 27 pieces of elephant tusks in his possession.
Tabora authorities also detained 20 people for conducting unlicensed traditional healing activities, 10 individuals linked to motorcycle theft, five suspected livestock thieves, and two accused of stealing electricity infrastructure.
Traffic Enforcement and Judicial Outcomes
Beyond criminal investigations, the security initiatives heavily emphasized public safety and infrastructure protection. In Dodoma, the Traffic Police Unit intensified awareness campaigns across schools, bodaboda stands, and bus stations. Enforcement operations recorded 15,018 traffic offences during the operational window.

Dodoma courts also finalized multiple trials during the period. One offender convicted of rape and sodomy received a life imprisonment term, while two others convicted of rape were handed 30-year prison sentences. Additional rulings included a five-year sentence for livestock theft and a five-year term for causing bodily injuries. Authorities across both regions continue to urge residents to provide timely information regarding criminal behavior to assist ongoing police operations.
