Taylor Swift announced her new single, “Patient Zero,” arriving Friday, Sept. 25, alongside three limited-edition $3.99 physical CDs. The surprise release follows months of fan speculation and comes just days before Swift accepts the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the MTV Video Music Awards.
A Cryptic Website Countdown and Instagram Reveal
Visitors to TaylorSwift.com earlier on Sept. 22 were met with a burgundy curtain covered in glittering letters and a countdown clock set to expire at 2 p.m. ET. Once the timer hit zero, the website was updated to reveal collector’s edition CDs for “Patient Zero” available for preorder. Swift subsequently took to social media to share the official news with her followers.

Following the announcement, the pop star released three CD variations of the track, including a piano version and an acoustic version, for pre-order on the site. The front covers of the CDs featured three different photos of Swift, 36, donning different black-colored outfits, with additional pics of the pop star on the back cover. Her website is selling three limited edition CDs of the single, which will ship on Oct. 13. Once the countdown timed out, her website updated to reveal three, limited-edition CD variants of the new track: one with a double-sided cover as well as an acoustic and piano version, for $3.99 each. The track is available now to preorder on Swift’s website, along with an acoustic version and piano version, each of which come with an alternative cover. Swift’s team had also previously added a third page to the letter announcing she had bought back the master recordings of her first six albums. It is her first new song since marrying Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden in July.
Connecting the Easter Eggs to ‘The Life of a Showgirl’
For weeks, observant fans had tracked a series of subtle clues pointing toward new material. Swift dropped her characteristic easter eggs: She changed her Instagram bio to And, baby, that's sh0w business f0r y0u. ❤️🔥; tweaked the layout of the “Read My Letter” page of her website; and, in a Law & Order-themed skit that aired during the Emmy Awards, rattled off a string of nonsense words that apparently unscramble to reveal the message HI MY FIRST RECORD’S RE-RECORD IS OUT NOV TEN. AHAHAHA. The single’s title was teased with clues that included the letter O in her Instagram bio description being changed to the numeral 0 in three spots. On the sale page for the physical single, the logo for The Life of a Showgirl appears. Swift put out The Life of a Showgirl last October. The song arriving Friday (Sept. 25) will mark Swift’s first release since The Life of a Showgirl last October.
Industry analysts and devoted listeners have questioned whether the track serves as a standalone release or acts as a precursor. Swift’s new song, “Patient Zero” — her first since her starry wedding this summer. It releases Friday.
