Kozhikode: Police have arrested four people, including a government official, for robbing a jewelery shop on the Kozhikode Kammathi line in broad daylight. The arrested are P Pranav (29) from Manakkadavu, KP Sarfas Ali (22) from Chakumkadavu, MM Subeesh (29) from East Room and PV Akhil (28) from West Room. Pranav and Subhash are temporary employees in the postal department. Sarfas is an employee of the same shop.
The incident took place last Friday. The burglary took place when the shop was closed to go to church in the afternoon. Police said the theft came at the end of a two-month plan. Sarfas convinced the shopkeeper that he had lost the keys to the shop two months ago. The owner then opened the shop with a copy of the key. Pretending to be the shopkeeper’s loyalist, Sarfas knew exactly where the shopkeeper was depositing gold, where he was depositing money, and where the camera’s DVR was located. Friday afternoon was chosen to carry out the theft after checking the camera footage every day.
Examination of the CCTV footage revealed that on Fridays, many people in Kammathi Lane would wear white and it would be difficult to identify white-clad people on camera. Pranav’s car was parked in front of the shop on the morning of the incident. Akhil, who is unfamiliar to many in Kammathi Lane, entered the shop and stole only the goods as per the pre-determined location. They were careful not to use the phone at the time of the incident. Nearby CCTV footage helped nab the culprits. Defendants told police that the robbery was carried out to make quick money.
