Wang signed, on May 27, in Tarawa, the capital, documents establishing cooperation to build infrastructure and fight against climate change. “Helping developing countries is helping China itself,” he said, according to a Foreign Office statement.

Wang further lashed out at the United States and its allies, such as Australia, which have long wielded influence in the region. “The United States and its accomplices always devote their energy to deliberately blocking China’s development,” he assured.

The atoll has only a few dozen inhabitants and it is difficult to see the economic benefits that the rehabilitation of the aerodrome would bring them.
