in the Gers, a textbook case of divisions on the left

Local against national or general imbroglio. In the Gers, the motivated voter must equip themselves with a particularly sensitive political GPS in the 2e constituency (Condom) before heading to the polls. In addition to its fourteen candidates – including classics, dissidents and unknowns – the 2ewhich also covers part of Armagnac, offers a unique configuration on the left in France, which could become the textbook case of a new political order.

Initially, it was reserved for the Socialist Party, within the national agreement of the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), in the continuity of the three mandates exercised by Gisèle Biémouret (Socialist Party, PS), who chose not to show up. David Taupiac, mayor of Saint-Clar, previously appointed by the PS, was therefore to be the candidate of Nupes. But the regional councilor refuses the agreement with Nupes and was finally divested by the coalition in favor of Françoise Dubos (La France insoumise, LFI), who recovers the logos of the parties involved in the agreement, LFI, Europe Ecologie-Les Greens (EELV), French Communist Party (PCF)… and PS. A decision that angers the outgoing MP: “Other socialist candidates have chosen to refuse the agreement but have not had a Nupes candidate against them. We could be left alone on this constituency, while the PS had only six reserved in Occitania, it is a surrender of the PS against LFI. »

The “boulevard” which seemed to be offered to the single candidate could therefore be reduced to a secondary road… even if the image suits David Taupiac perfectly, who first saw himself as a local elected official in this rural Gers . Especially since on the right, Michel Gabas, departmental councilor and mayor of Eauze (Les Républicains, LR), finds himself alone on the track. The new candidate Renaissance-Ensemble Maëva Boursier must however face competition from Christopher Soccio, this time without a label, after having been the official candidate of La République en Marche in 2017.

Agreement “not balanced”

Pour “to be at the head of the pack or at least second”, the rivals on the left have chosen two diametrically opposed strategies. David Taupiac insists on local implementation, while Françoise Dubos favors national issues. The first, elected well established, is supported by the president of the departmental council, a number of local elected officials and Carole Delga, president of the Occitanie region, who has become the emblematic figure of the refusal of the Nupes agreement on behalf of the “political coherence” to the left. “I will be there on June 7 to give all my support to a legitimate, serious, locally anchored candidate who carries the Gers projects”she explains to Monde.
