British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived his own Conservative party’s vote of no confidence. 211 MPs from the Tories voted in London on Monday evening for Johnson to remain as party leader and thus also as prime minister, but 148 MPs voted no confidence in him. In the end, 32 votes were missing to force Johnson to resign.
However, the extent of the revolt against the party leader is likely to further weaken his authority – so Johnson’s future as prime minister is by no means certain after this vote.
Johnson was last over because of the affair Parties at the seat of government during the Corona lockdown have also come under strong criticism within their own party. For a vote of no confidence to be successful, more than half of the 359 Tory MPs in the House of Commons would have had to vote in favor of this step in the secret ballot. In the end, more than 40 percent did.
After the failure of the vote of no confidence, according to internal party rules, no further votes of this kind are possible for a year. Johnson’s predecessor Theresa May, however, had not helped even a vote of no confidence: she survived a vote of confidence at the end of 2018, but then gave up a few months later due to a lack of support.
