A third death during the Tourist Trophy, the deadliest motorcycle race in the world

The Tourist Trophy is bereaved for the third time in less than a week. After Welsh driver Mark Purslow and French sidecar passenger Olivier Lavorel, Northern Irish competitor Davy Morgan died following an accident on the roads of the Isle of Man, on a mountainous section of the course of this race considered to be the most dangerous in the world. He was 52 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the loss of Davy Morgan following an incident on the last lap of the first Supersport Race,” the organizers wrote on Twitter, adding that the man was an experienced driver. It was his 20th participation in the Tourist Trophy.

During this 2022 edition, an Englishman was also seriously injured, it is Dave Moffitt, a pilot from the Isle of Man, injured last Thursday in an accident and transported by plane to hospital in Liverpool.

The Tourist Trophy takes place on a circuit drawn on roads closed to traffic, 60 km long, crossing villages and mountains. The average of the best there exceeds 215 km/h. More than 260 competitors have lost their lives there since 1907.

The 2020 and 2021 editions of the events, which are held over several days and attract some 50,000 spectators, had been canceled due to Covid-19.

That of 2016 was one of the deadliest with the deaths of five pilots.
