The cabinet meeting on Monday did not decide on a constitutional amendment recommendation to remove the president’s excess power. Following a disagreement, the draft recommendation was postponed to next week. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, as President, repealed the 19th Amendment, which allowed parliament to impose control on the President. The 21st Amendment, which repeals the ’20A ‘amendment introduced for this purpose, is under consideration. Members of the ruling Sri Lanka People’s Liberation Party (SLPP) have opposed opposition to discussing a constitutional amendment without resolving the country’s financial crisis.
