Lakewood: A driver who ran over a student was charged with murder

A driver of a car that hit a Haredi resident of Lakewood, New Jersey, was charged with murder. The driver raced at breakneck speed and hit the victim’s vehicle, a father of five, and killed on the spot

Alejandro Huarte-Arias, 23, was charged with murder after he was involved in a car accident that occurred in Lakewood on March 9, 2022, resulting in the death of R. Favi Mendel, 32, of Lakewood.

At around 8:15 a.m. that day, the driver of the vehicle sped off at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Courtney Street, and severely hit Favi Mandel, a father of five. The Lake District Attorney’s Office and the Lakewood Police Traffic Safety Unit found that the driver was traveling too fast. He hit Favi Mendel’s Chevrolet, which tried to turn left onto Courtney Street, killing the father of five. This was reported by the Lakewood Alerts website.

The driver was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of a foot fracture. A further investigation by the Ocean County Attorney’s Office and the Lakewood Police Traffic Safety Unit revealed that the driver was traveling at a speed of 150 mph at the time of the accident – more than double the speed limit of 70 miles on the road.
