Stephanie Coral Browitt, 23, was seriously injured in a volcanic eruption on New Zealand’s White Island volcano. About 70% of her body was burnt and her face and limbs were peeled off. She was treated for countless days with a bandage all over her face. But in a recent emotional interview, she removed the compression bandage from her face for the first time in three years. She took her picture on her phone for the first time since the December 9, 2019 natural disaster. Despite her wrinkles and blemishes, this face is never an insult to her, but a source of pride. Because she did not go through something that anyone could easily pass through. All that is seen on this face today is the remnant of the courage she showed to overcome adversity.
When the volcano erupted, she was one of the 47 tourists who visited the site that day. Twenty-two people who died there that day included her father and sister. She escaped and was airlifted to hospital. With a third degree burn, she was fighting for her life. Two weeks passed in a coma. Now, in an interview with “60 Minutes Australia”, she reveals her face to the world for the first time. “Survival is real. “I never knew I had it,” she said.
