Rosh Yeshiva Gersh Alter this week made harsh remarks about the responsibility of educators and teachers in Talmud Torah, in cases where there is bullying and social abuse against children in Talmud Torah and in educational settings.
The Rosh Yeshiva said these words during a responsa and discourse on the education of generations, with a team of teachers from the Talmud HaTorah who included the followers of Or Olam in the city of Beitar Illit.
When the head of the yeshiva is asked whether the educator or the teacher should intervene in quarrels between children. The questioner stated that it might be worthwhile for the educator to intervene in order to maintain discipline in the classroom, but the head of the yeshiva replied: “What about discipline? Gersh Alter added that the teachers of the past would intervene in the piety of the students, even during the children’s stay outside the educational framework. “So maybe this task is too big for today’s educators,” said the Rosh Yeshiva, “but maintaining a degree between a person and his friend is more important than learning.”
