“The war is good for business” – the arms exhibition in Paris arouses record interest

by time news

These days, the world’s most important arms exhibition for the ground forces is taking place in Paris. “This year everything has to do with Ukraine. The war is good for business, but it’s not something I’m happy about,” said an Eastern European arms manufacturer who chose to remain anonymous.

The exhibition showcases weapons from over 60 countries, including tanks, armored vehicles, weapons and ammunition. At the same time, this year, the second largest arms exporter in the world – Russia – stood out in its absence. Three Russian producers were supposed to appear at the show, but of course their participation was eventually canceled due to the events. On the other hand, out of the 1700 companies on display, the place of manufacturers from the Baltic and Eastern European countries stood out, doubling or tripling their presence.

Many of the manufacturers talked about a jump in demand and a large investment of the various countries in increasing production for the purpose of shipping to Ukraine or to increase their own arsenal.

“France has entered an economic war,” President Macron said at the opening of the arms show. He called on European countries to learn from past mistakes and develop their own defense industry. “We have to go much farther, faster and stronger because that’s what geopolitics dictates to us,” he said.

Many manufacturers said that there was a lack of capabilities in Europe in light of long years of dependence on imports, especially American. As suppliers said they will not be able to catch up with the demand for weapons for Ukraine until 2024-2025. According to Eli Tennenbaum, director of the Center for Military Studies at the Institute of International Relations in Paris, Ukraine’s daily use of ammunition is higher than what Europe is capable of producing in a month. “We now have a European defense industry that is not in line with what we see in Ukraine,” he said. He added that a lack of production capacity could eventually slow down both Russia and Ukraine.

The place of the Israeli arms industry was not absent from Paris either. The Ministry of Defense presents an unmanned vehicle that includes systems from several Israeli arms companies, such as Elbit Systems

Raphael and IAI. Elbit Systems itself presents at the exhibition a new multi-tactical radar system. The system is able to locate and track thousands of objects of different sizes and speeds, and it allows tactical forces to use a single system to deal with multiple targets. Elbit will also present a light tank turret called Sabrah and other products.
