With the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the leader of the coalition of left-wing parties New Popular Ecological and Social Alliance (Nupes), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, France now has a “discordant new duo”, judges the Argentinian left-wing newspaper Page 12. The presidential duel only changed one of its protagonists, because “if neither Macron nor Mélenchon were candidates in these elections, they respectively embody the majority and the opposition, around which the debates and decisions will be formulated”.
The results of this first round of legislative elections reveal a “surprising paradox”. Two months after the re-election of a centrist-liberal president against a far-right candidate, the main opposition force is now a left-wing alliance “eurosceptic and anti-capitalist”.
The return of the left, mediator of change
This change, deep and dazzling, “is a major conquest for political action”. Especially since, even if the National Rally continues to win votes, the arrival of the Nupes has deprived it of the monopoly of the opposition and of media attention.
