Pope Francis says the war in Ukraine is, in a sense, the result of Russia’s provocation. The pope said that months before Russia sent troops to Ukraine, a head of state he had met had said that NATO was “constantly provoking Russia in a way that could lead to war.” The pope’s response came in an interview with Jesuit Publishers.
However he acknowledged that their numbers were not enough to defeat Putin’s government. Russia, which has said it will end military action in a week’s, has been heroically opposed by Ukrainian troops and people. Pope Benedict XVI said that the world war situation was at stake, including the interests of various nations, the arms trade and the occupation of territories.
