Automated speed cameras: soon a reduced reporting distance?

by time news

For two years, some departments will test “reduced size” signage, which will replace the usual SR3D panels announcing automated speed cameras. The departments where the experiment will be implemented are Bouches-du-Rhône, Doubs, Haute-Garonne, Hérault and Territoire de Belfort.

Smaller and closer panels

The current SR3D panels are accompanied by a notion of distance which announces an entire zone likely to be controlled called “ decoy control area “. This zone can extend over a distance ranging from 5 to 100 km. The panel that has just been deployed in the experimental phase will be smaller in size and will be placed between 20 and 50 meters before the radar. Why ? As indicated in the Official Journal, this is due to the urban nature of the places where these devices are located.

A source of accidents?

The problem being that this reduced size will possibly give him a sudden brake… As the Nextinpact site explains, according to the decree of May 25, 2022, this experiment will make it possible to produce a report which will aim to evaluate not only the impact on the effectiveness of the control system, but also on the understanding and readability by all users of the signage put in place. Finally, it will also be necessary to take an interest in incidents or accidents linked to experimental signage, or to the impact of the signs in question on possible dangerous behavior at the wheel such as sudden braking. The report will be submitted to the road safety delegate and the director of road mobility.
