Mystery in South Africa: At least 20 young people were found dead (between Saturday and Sunday) at a nightclub in East London. The cause of death is not yet known, but local media reported that the youths were lying with no signs of life and appeared to have collapsed, with no signs of injury.
Prime Minister Oscar Maboyan did not give possible reasons for the deaths, but condemned “unlimited consumption of alcohol. It is impossible to just trade in society and think that young people are not going to experiment.”
Police said the youngsters ranged in age from 18 to 20, and the incident occurred in the early morning hours. A safety official told the AFP news agency that a stampede was ruled out as the cause of death because “there are no visible wounds”. The official added that investigators are investigating whether it was poisoning.
