On Saturday June 26, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs of the European Union made a surprise visit to Tehran. On this occasion, Josep Borrell and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced the resumption of indirect talks with the United States to restore the historic 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement. This had been denounced by the United States in 2018, and the negotiations undertaken in the meantime had been at a standstill since March.

Barely three days after this announcement, talks should start between Iran and the United States, with a view to restoring the agreement and lifting the sanctions, which have severely affected the Iranian economy. For the press in Tehran, a major challenge therefore weighs on the meeting which opens in Doha.

The impatience of Westerners

The newspaper Iran, an Iranian government publication, reports that US Special Envoy for Iranian Affairs Robert Malley and Iranian Nuclear Negotiator Ali Bagheri arrived in Doha on Tuesday (June 28th). He quotes Foreign Affairs spokesman Said Khatibzadeh as saying:

“We are committed to resolving remaining issues [entre Téhéran et Washington] a.s.a.p.”
