A fateful semester for the automotive sector in Spain: 10.7% fewer vehicles have been sold so far this year, a total of 407,757 units. These figures are a direct consequence of the shortage of semiconductors and longer delivery times, which have particularly affected one of the largest buyers in the Spanish market: the rent-a-car.

Specifically, rental companies acquired 114,085 new passenger cars, 48.3% less than in the previous year. The individual and business channels, on the other hand, did show comparative increases, although they were modest 1.2% and 2.3%, with 177,132 and 171,590 units, respectively.

In June, a traditionally good month – it had the purchases of the RAC, which was preparing for the summer season – 89,252 vehicles were registered, a decrease of 7.8%.

By channels, the companies were the only ones that saw a black result in June, with 37,100 purchases, 18.4% more than a year ago. Individuals lagged behind, both in share and volume, with 35,551 registrations, 2% less. The biggest blow, as usual, is that of the rental companies, which took over 16,601 passenger cars, 43.1% less.

In the joint statement from the sector employers, Anfac states that “taking into account this context and the accumulated trend in the first semester, the forecasts indicate closing around 800,000 passenger cars sold this year. A figure below the previous year and very far of the natural rhythm of the national market, over the 1.3 million annual registrations”.

The association of distributors, Ganvam, echoes these forecasts, which predicts a third consecutive year below 900,000 registrations, in addition to seeing a market mired in the highest inflation of the last 37 years.

For the representatives of the official dealers, Faconauto, “an insufficient market is becoming chronic to promote a real recovery in the sector. The data for the first half of the year are not a good foundation for facing the second half of the year, in an economic context of great uncertainty “.

Light commercials continue their trend of double-digit losses and are now approaching almost two consecutive years of falls. In June, this decline was 32.4%, with 10,446 units and, in aggregate, 35.4%, with 56,857 registrations.
