9 people killed in violent crackdown by security forces on anti-coup protests in Sudan

The dictatorial regime was overthrown in Sudan in 2019. After that, in a situation where democratic activities were being carried out, last (2022) October, army commander Abdel Fateh Al Burhan launched a revolution against the government.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdaq was captured by the army. The army announced that Abdullah Hamtaq would continue in the post as per the agreement made amid the political crisis that ensued.

Meanwhile, the struggle against the military coup broke out in Sudan. Army and civilians clashed during yesterday’s protest. Two protesters were killed.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdak has announced his resignation after saying that efforts to save the country from disaster have failed.

The death toll from protest-related violence since last year’s coup has reached 114. Hundreds of anti-coup protesters have taken to the streets of the capital Khartoum and its suburbs.

They were protesting to end the military rule. A large number of people participated in the rallies held on Thursday. Nine people were killed in the violent crackdown by the security forces.

It was the worst day in months in the long-running protests against a military takeover led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan last October, AFP reported.

Protesters burnt tires and barricades. Security forces used bullets to control the protesters.

Tear gas and powerful water cannons were fired at the protesters. Demonstrators are demanding the restoration of the transition to civilian rule that began in 2019 after the ouster of longtime dictator Omar al-Bashir.

The death toll from protest-related violence since last year’s coup has reached 114. The military coup has further plunged Sudan into political and economic crisis.
