Excess mortality observed in New Brunswick (Canada) at the end of 2021: the Minister of Health is concerned

by time news

According to a CBC News article dated June 10, New Brunswick (Canada) recorded an excess mortality of 886 people during the last twenty-five weeks of the year 2021. For the moment, the cause of this abnormal rate mortality remains unexplained. Also, the Minister of Health of New Brunswick (Canada), Dorothy Shepard, declared that the Ministry of Health intends to proceed with the analysis of these excess deaths once all the deaths recorded for that year have been coded. by Statistics Canada.

Unexplained deaths that sow doubt

Concerned by the high and unexplained number of these deaths at the end of 2021, Dorothy Shepard assured that she would try to investigate what happened.

“I think everyone wants to know”she launched to the leader of the opposition, Roger Melanson, who wondered about the update of a report of Statistics Canada published on June 9. This reports that almost 4,599 people died in the last 25 weeks of 2021, 886 more deaths than the average for this time of year, after adjusting for age and growth. population.

According to the CBC article, there is talk of a death rate 23.9% higher than normal. This rate of “excess mortality” is among the highest among Canadian provinces. It is even higher than those of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta, which, during the same period, reported some of the highest death rates.

These deaths sowing doubt, Roger Melanson demands it: “We want to know what happened.” Approving, the Minister of Health replied: “This is a question that New Brunswickers need to be answered, Mr. Speaker, and I assure the Interim Leader of the Opposition that they will get one.”.

“And if it’s not covid that’s killing people, what is?”

Regarding covid-related deaths, only 114 deaths from the disease were recorded by New Brunswick during the last 25 weeks of 2021.

According to academic Tara Moriarty, the peak in deaths during the last five weeks of 2021 as part of the Covid-19 epidemic probably explains this level of excess mortality, these deaths having “certainly” been caused by covid, but possibly missed by health authorities.

Convinced that the deaths in question are due to the virus, academic Tara Moriarty asks: “The level of excess mortality in New Brunswick during this time is huge. And if it’s not covid that’s killing people, what the hell is it?”.

Statistics Canada will collect 2021 data to help better understand these deaths “unexplained”. Indeed, the Canadian statistical agency has been monitoring the deaths that have occurred in each province during the Covid-19 pandemic on a monthly basis, comparing them to those of a normal year in order to detect the “excess mortality” caused directly and indirectly by the virus.
