Images of the Milky Way’s rising altitude, galaxy collision and aurora borealis across the night sky have been shortlisted for this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.

Images of the rising Milky Way, colliding galaxies and the aurora borealis across the night sky have been shortlisted for this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, with more than 3,000 entries received from a group of amateur and professional photographers in 67 countries around the world.

Brief images of the competition, run by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, include the rising harvest moon, and the lights of the Milky Way reflected by the world’s highest national highway in Tibet.
