Rising prices hit families with children hardest, food banks point out

by time news

Eight out of ten people have increased their use of food aid, according to the survey by the French Federation of Food Banks (FFBA).

Families with children are particularly affected by the rise in prices, said Thursday the French Federation of Food Banks (FFBA), which recorded a 4% increase in the number of people welcomed by its network in the first quarter. Inflation has caused an increase in food expenditure for half of those questioned: 60% of families with children, 40% of single people, according to the FFBA, which carried out a flash survey of 528 people between the 5th and the June 29, 2022. Eight out of ten people have increased their reliance on food aid.

People attending food aid structures had to reduce their expenditure items devoted to heating (57%), petrol (53%), but even more less incompressible expenditure such as clothing (78%) and leisure ( 67%). When they get help, 90% of people questioned say they wait to have access to fruit and vegetables and meat, 80% to starchy foods and dairy products, some 50% to sweet products and 40% to drinks. .

«People in precarious situations expect food banks to have access to products with high nutritional value, which they cannot afford and which are expensive“, explained during a press conference Laurence Champier, general manager of the FFBA, whose network helps 2.2 million people.

The food check hailed

Food is the third item of expenditure after rent and water and energy bills for people hosted in the food bank network. Among them, 56%have at least one child. They are often women who have a job, but precarious or part-time», underlined Laurence Champier.

The emergency food check that the government has planned to pay at the start of the school year (100 euros per household and 50 euros per child) “proves necessary in view of the results presented by our flash study“, underlines the FFBA in its study. It welcomes the ongoing reflections on a second system which would facilitate French people’s access to quality and local products and would allow “to improve the quality of food for the poorest“. Regarding the terms of payment, the FFBA offers a “delegation to food banks of part of the budget allocated to the implementation of the food voucher“to support his purchases”towards local products of French origin».
