Excise duty on ATF: Good news for foreign travelers. Traveling on international flights is now easier. In fact, the finance ministry has exempted domestic airlines operating international flights from 11 percent basic excise duty on purchase of jet fuel i.e. ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) from companies that market jet fuel. That means, now ATF will no longer be subject to excise duty.

Basic excise duty will not be levied on ATF sold to domestic airlines for operating international flights, the ministry said in a notification. This decision is effective from July 1, 2022.
Additional excise duty on ATF
It is to be noted that earlier on July 1, the government had announced that a special additional excise duty of Rs.6 per liter would be levied on aviation fuel exports. After that, doubts were raised whether this fee would apply to domestic airlines operating international flights. But now the government has clarified this. This decision has been welcomed by the airlines providing the service.

Oil marketing companies have suggested that domestic airlines with international flights will have to pay 11 per cent basic excise duty after earlier levying excise duty on ATF exports. But the finance ministry has clarified that the excise duty will not apply to international flights operated by domestic airlines.
The aviation sector is happy with this decision of the government. Abhishek Jain, tax partner of KPMG said, “While excise duty is levied on the fuel of foreign flights, the government has given exemption to domestic airlines. This is a welcome move for the aviation industry. Through this, the number of passengers will increase,” he hoped.
