New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Arindam Bagshi has said that Sri Lanka has always had India’s support.

In a statement issued in this regard, he said, “We are aware of the various challenges faced by the Sri Lankan government and the people of that country. We are helping the people of Sri Lanka to overcome this difficult time.

As a close ally, India has given aid worth $3.8 billion to Sri Lanka. We are also looking closely at the current situation in Sri Lanka.

We respect the sentiments of Sri Lankan people. They struggle to restore their resources and ensure progress. “We only support democratic protests led by the people,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has announced his resignation as a result of massive protests by the people. As the nation rallied, the police and army were shocked to see the people march towards the President’s House in the capital Colombo yesterday. As a result, the public occupied the President’s House.

Following this, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has announced that he will resign as President on the 13th. Similarly, Ranil Wickremesinghe has also announced that he will resign from the post of Prime Minister once the all-party system of government is possible.

However, protests continue there. In this case, India has extended a hand of support to Sri Lanka and its people.
