India’s biggest sports festival, IPL started in 2008 and has successfully completed 15 years and today it has become the world’s No. 1 T20. IPL has emerged as the world’s standard cricket series more than the World Cups conducted by ICC as most of the matches held in it are thrilling until the last over. Also, the BCCI, which rakes in thousands of crores every year in this series, has emerged as a richer cricket board than the ICC, which conducts international matches.

To further strengthen it, the BCCI is busy working on expanding the IPL to a grand series of 84, 94 matches from 2025 onwards. Due to this, there is a possibility of cricket becoming the number one sports series in the world soon, but there is also a risk of a decrease in international cricket matches.

Cons of IPL:
The IPL, which was created to find quality players to play for India on the international stage, is doing the job perfectly, but at times it has also caused a lot of disadvantages for Indian cricket. An example of this is that in recent times, many players prefer playing in the IPL series over playing for the country because the salary paid in crores for playing for 2 months is not available even if they play for the whole year for the country.

And the BCCI has been rolling out the red carpet for foreign players to participate in the IPL series, not allowing Indian players in foreign series. So foreign players who are well aware of the conditions of Indian times are hitting barrages against India in international matches held on Indian soil.

But Indian players who do not get a chance to know more about foreign situations can be seen stuck in foreign countries at many times. Moreover, foreign coaches who work with Indian players in this series know their strengths and weaknesses and use them while working for their country or the opposition during international matches, which is disadvantageous for India.

Gavaskar worries:
The best example of that is Brendan McCullum, who departed as the coach of Kolkata in the 5th Test match against England in the city of Birmingham recently, in the IPL 2022 series. In this case, former Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has expressed concern that foreign coaches working in the IPL series will have a huge impact on India in the international arena.

Here’s what he said in a recent interview about it. “When it comes to coaches in the IPL, we have to look at that. Many coaches who coach the country in the international arena know the strength of our players in the IPL series. And nowadays they can see video data on the strengths and weaknesses of our players from the computer. This is a huge disadvantage for Indian cricket.”

“Because many of them go to other teams after the IPL and act as consultants if not as head coaches but also as assistant coaches in some department like batting and bowling. They have complete information about the strengths and weaknesses of the Indian team players. So this is not doing any good for Indian cricket,” he said.

Nowadays, all teams have technical experts who analyze and provide information about the opponents to find out the weaknesses of the opposing players. But Sunil Gavaskar lamented that IPL having a feature where coaches working in the IPL series can get such information directly and use it against India at the international level will not help Indian cricket in any way. Therefore, he also requested that BCCI should consider appointing more Indian coaches for IPL team managements in the future.
