La Nupes alone against all. In the National Assembly, the New People’s Ecological and Social Union failed to rally all the opposition to overthrow the government of Elisabeth Borne, with its motion of censure debated Monday, July 11. But was that really his goal?

Being the first to speak in front of a sparse Hemicycle, the leader of the group La France insoumise (LFI), Mathilde Panot, praised in her diatribe a “political clarification”. “This vote will expose those who want to fight the social and ecological war with you and those who will fight the battle against you. Colleagues choose! »she concluded, facing the Prime Minister, whose maintenance she once again challenged at Matignon.

“You do not derive your legitimacy from the legislative elections or even from the Parliament (…). You are, in this function, a democratic anomaly”criticized the deputy of Val-de-Marne, recalling that the motion of censure of the Nupes was motivated by the refusal of Elisabeth Borne to submit to a vote of confidence at the end of her declaration of general policy, the July 6.

While only the deputies in favor of the motion of censure could take part in the vote, the Nupes did not refuel in its ranks. Of the 151 deputies, 145 voted in favor, far from the absolute majority set at 289. If three groups of the Nupes (the “rebellious”, the ecologists and the communists) unanimously adopted the motion of censure, within of the socialists, six elected – the former president of the Socialist Party (PS) group, Valérie Rabault (Tarn-et-Garonne), Joël Aviragnet (Haute-Garonne), Bertrand Petit (Pas-de-Calais), Dominique Potier ( Meurthe-et-Moselle), Hervé Saulignac (Ardèche) and Cécile Untermaier (Saône-et-Loire) – failed at the time of the ballot.

Apart from Nupes, the far-right deputy Nicolas Dupont-Aignan (Essonne) joined the motion of censure. “The Nupes Congress is officially over”quipped government spokesman Olivier Véran, welcoming a “new defeat for [le leader de LFI] Jean-Luc Melenchon”.

Boosted face-to-face with Elisabeth Borne

As some feared on the left, the episode made it possible to mechanically strengthen the position of Elisabeth Borne. She delivered a very offensive speech against Nupes, regretting finding herself in the Hemicycle to debate a “motion sewn with a trial of intent which obstructs parliamentary work”. “Unfortunately, today, it is not the daily life of the French that we are talking about”, she argued. Accusing the Nupes of being “angry with democracy and the outcome of the ballot box », Mme Borne tried to reverse the presumption of illegitimacy put forward by the Nupes since the legislative elections. “You didn’t winasserted the Prime Minister. In a democracy, it is not the one who has fewer votes, fewer seats, who is legitimate to govern. »
