Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir, Olympic marathon champion, announced on Monday that she had to withdraw from the World Championships in Eugene, United States, (July 15-24) because of a hip injury. “I really wanted to go to Oregon, but I developed a hip injury during my training“, explained the 28-year-old athlete to AFP. “The doctor asked me to rest“, she added.

Olympic champion last summer in Sapporo, the double half-marathon world champion was the favorite for the 42.195 km event at the Worlds, after her victories in the prestigious marathons of New York (2021) and Boston at the spring. Kenya will always be able to rely on reigning world champion Ruth Chepngetich.
