The euro reaches parity with the dollar, a first since 2002

by time news

The euro fell on Tuesday July 12 to a dollar, a threshold which had not been reached since the year of its introduction two decades ago. The European currency has fallen in recent months, weighed down by the risk of a cut in Russian gas supplies which could affect the economy of European countries.

Investors favored the greenback, a safe haven, which has gained nearly 14% since the start of the year. It briefly traded at one dollar for one euro around 09:50 GMT (11:50 a.m. in Paris), a high since December 2002.
