A new study led by academics from the UK’s Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and Austria’s Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences suggests that hunger can lead to excessive anger and frustration and can sap happiness.
The study was conducted on 64 adults from Central Europe. For 21 days in a row, they observed their emotional state while they were hungry. It was also learned whether there was any change in behavior or activity as hunger increased. The 64 people recorded their state of mind five times a day in a smart phone app.
Each day’s situation was recorded, whether it was at home or in the office. This type of data collection was done by the researchers. It was possible to understand from their emotional states that there is a positive relationship between hunger and anger. The study was conducted on people of different age, gender, body composition and digestive system. But despite all these differences, the study says that most people behave the same when they are hungry.
37 percent are very upset when they are hungry. 34 percent feel angry when they are hungry. 38 percent feel less happy when they feel hungry. Diurnal fluctuations in appetite also cause different conditions, the study says.
“It is well known that hunger can affect our emotions. But not much research has been done in this regard. This is the first time that such a scientific study is being conducted on hunger. “What we’ve learned from people’s daily lives is that hunger is closely related to anger, restlessness and unhappiness,” said Viren Swamy, professor of social psychology at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), who played a key role in the study.
Hunger creates unpleasant feelings in a person. The study was conducted by understanding and evaluating the mood of people for several days. The researchers added that they recorded how a person felt when they were hungry each day.
