Lhe boss of the SNCF Jean-Pierre Farandou assessed on Wednesday July 13 the need for investment in the rail sector at around 100 billion additional euros over 15 years in order to contribute to the decarbonization of transport by doubling the share of the train. To achieve this objective, the president of the railway company has defended several projects which will require an investment “not inaccessible for public power”, he assured during a meeting with a group of journalists.
Jean-Pierre Farrandou notably insisted on the idea of creating metropolitan RERs in 13 major French cities and on the need to double the share of rail freight in the transport of goods. Another important subject: the modernization of signaling with a massive investment in centralized control systems in order to reduce the number of signal boxes. Finally, the boss of the SNCF also invites to continue the construction of new high-speed lines.
The whole would represent an effort of 100 billion additional euros over 15 years, for which the State could contribute up to 50%, he assures. The final objective is to increase the modal share of rail in transport from 10 to 20%, assures the company.
