Male or female? Dog or dog: in? In the city of Neuenrade (North Rhine-Westphalia), gender diversity is apparently very important – for dogs!
CLEAR TEXT: Anyone who registers their four-legged friend for dog tax in the small town of North Rhine-Westphalia can not only choose between “female” and “male” in the registration portal – but also choose “diverse” or “no answer”.

The mayor of Neuenrade, Antonius Wiesemann (63, CDU), said when asked by BILD that he knew nothing about the process.
▶ ︎ A BILD sample showed: In other cities – such as Berlin or Dresden – the third sex of dogs is still unknown. Here, dog owners can still only choose between male or female when registering the dog tax.
Can dogs be gay or diverse?
Yes! “Homosexuality is completely normal in the animal world,” says BILD veterinarian Gabriele Marquardt (61).
Marquardt: “You can see that in every species of animal.” Homosexual impulses are present in every species, which is part of the “natural sexual repertoire”, according to the expert. However, it is more about practicing the reproductive instinct.
Diversity is also possible in animals. “There are real hermaphroditic formations with facilities for both sexes.” Only a veterinarian can determine this (by ultrasound).
“Otherwise, for example, male-looking female dogs are part of nature’s planning – without being classified as ‘diverse’.”
